IGEN is a consortium of Illinois community colleges working together to share resources, common experiences and best practices to help grow the new green economy. Through this unique platform, they have recently developed 32 online, open-source green career degree and certification programs.
IGEN is working to:

A local Marine veteran, Calvin McIntosh, found a future in a green career, through College of Lake County’s HVAC/R program. CLC’s HVAC/R program is part of their Green Facilities Management Program.
Kankakee Community College created Power Pack Kankakee to educate homeowners and businesses on the benefits of solar energy. Illinois Central College developed a certificate program for deconstruction to teach students what to salvage, recycle, or throw away. The program consists of four courses, to be completed during one semester, in classroom, online, or a combination format. The final course is an internship with a local business, working on a deconstruction project.
KCC is one of the first schools to offer an important new 6 credit hour, online Sustainable Resource Management (SRM) Certificate program. Graduates will be eligible to take the new nationally accredited Illinois State SRM certification exam. Five Illinois community colleges are installing almost 900 energy-efficient outdoor lights this spring with the help of a grant arranged through the Illinois Green Economy Network. The new LED fixtures will provide brighter light and save an estimated 615,080 kilowatt hours, or more than $68,000 a year.

SWIC Welding Technology student Dawn Poston of Worden has been working as a welder/robot programmer at Seyer Industries in St. Peters, Missouri since February 2014. She said her education helped her move into a field that can give her a chance to make a better life for her children.
Greg Hansbraugh cites the job placement rate for students as the best indicator of the program’s success. “In addition to working on wind farms in Illinois students have secured jobs across the country, including Michigan, Indiana, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, California, and even in Puerto Rico” said Hansbraugh.
“I impress upon my students to think outside the box and consider the opportunities there are for starting their own business in recycling while still using what they learning form their auto technology degree.”
Southwestern Illinois College Precision Machining Technology graduate and Industrial Maintenance Mechanics student Ashley Robinson of Wood River realized what she wanted to do with her education after visiting the college in 2013.
“I honestly don’t know what I would have done without that program being all that it is”, says Belford. With a sudden career change, Belford completed the program and is now working in the field.
At John A. Logan College, students interested in sustainable energy have a lot more options as a result of the IGEN Career Pathways grant. The school developed two new certificate programs and updated existing classes to create a new associate degree program with added equipment for increased hands-on experience.

The program offers hands-on training in cooking and food preparation, as well as team-oriented environment to spur innovation.
Christine Brockinton and Ellie Antova are two non-traditional students who are part of the 54 who have completed Biofuels Technology & Sustainability Certificate at Southeastern Illinois College and are now working in the industry.
Sustainable design within architecture and construction is the focus of Rend Lake College’s two new certificate programs: Green Facilities Management and Sustainable Design Green Building. In both programs, students receive hands-on experience during lab hours, using cutting-edge software. Two students that completed the Green Facilities Management program already found jobs within the field.

Heartland Community College has expanded its HVACR program, including geothermal, solar thermal, and sustainable energy classes. The program also added certificates in Building Controls Skills and sustainable Energy Systems, as well as a degree in Sustainable Energy Systems.
Southeastern Illinois College aims to provide students with a better understanding of the ethanol and biodiesel industry through a certificate program in biofuels. Since the program’s beginning in 2011, 54 students have taken classes or earned the certificate. Many students are already working in the industry.
Since the program began, 18 students have completed the Introduction to Solar Photo-Voltaic course. Students were a mix of traditional and non-traditional students who attended courses on a full time and part time basis.
The IGEN Career Pathways Grant helped Southwestern Illinois College to transform its manual machining program into a state-of-the-art Precision Machining Technology program that now ranks among the best in the state.
James first heard about the ELP through Ameren and was glad the program was there. As he worked toward BPI Certification, James needed to practice for the field portion of the examination. James turned to the Equipment Loan Program to borrow a set of equipment at which he needed proficiency.
Due to the Sustainable Food Production certificate program at Triton College, student Regina Milkovich couldn’t be happier with her job prospects. Participation in the program has provided Milkovich with many opportunities for collaboration, internships, and jobs. The program focuses on current policy challenges and reform of the food system to promote community health and the environment.
One of the programs that helped was IGEN Career Pathways, which used the NTER Learning System for the Plant Propagation course. This online education environment was a great tool for turning in homework, watching course related videos, and having a discussions with classmates.

Describe your role at Kankakee Community College and where you see the greatest need or opportunity for the college and your students.
I have recently accepted a position at Kankakee Community College (KCC) as an instructor in the electrical technology program to train students in renewable energy technology. KCC offers a 2-year Electrical Technology AAS with a Renewable Energy focus track and three renewable energy certificate options. The program features hands-on labs with real-world hardware and a local installation project at the end of each semester, either at KCC or in the Kankakee area. The main goal of the program is to prepare students to work safely and smartly in growing renewable energy fields.
